Building a healthy, resilient community, together.
The Alberta Healthy Communities Approach (AHCA) is an innovative five step process that can foster action and support you to create a healthy community.
The AHCA is a proven way of working that supports community-led planning and action across environments and settings to create healthy and thriving places to live, learn, work, play and age.
Examples of this work include increasing availability of healthy food, providing sunshade structures, or bringing community together to reduce loneliness.

The Medicine Hat Healthy Communities (MHHC) journey with the AHCA began in 2023; the AHCA is an evidenced based 5 step process that encourages a collaborative, sustainable way of working.
This video tells the story of Medicine Hat.

The first step focuses on engaging and connecting with community partners, establishing working relationships, and creating a common understanding of the Alberta Healthy Communities Approach. It’s about inviting diverse community perspectives to a shared table to explore what matter most to Hatters.

“One of the things we need to learn is that very great change starts from very small conversations amongst people who care.” - Margaret Wheatley
Medicine Hat Healthy Communities reviewed a total of 26 local reports to gain a deeper understanding of historical work and current trends. The information collected was analyzed, themed, and used to identify key priorities. To view the reports and collated data, click here.
An emphasis on health equity has been central to this work. Health equity means that all Hatters have fair access to opportunities—and fair access to engage in those opportunities—to reach their full potential. We believe that everyone deserves to live in a healthy community, one that offers meaningful work, supportive friends and neighbours, affordable homes, personal safety, and opportunities for recreation and leisure. The goal is to help communities define their own paths to wellness and optimize the community’s potential to create environments that support overall health and wellness. Following many conversations, MHHC prioritized specific action areas based off the data collected. Language was a common theme during team discussions – recognizing that our choice of words matters regardless of who we are talking about.
